Five years ago this month I was in the throes of a major purge, readying myself for an about-face life change. How was I to know a pandemic was coming?
People who shop, collect and never throw anything out must be feeling pretty smug right about now. Cooks and canners have full larders. Oenophiles have their cellars. Stuff curators have everything they need to make time-killing art projects or homemade masks. I, on the other hand, don’t have two hair ties to rub together, much less a bandana or a Crown Royal bag.
When I moved into the RV, food storage containers didn’t make the cut; they take up far too much room and are difficult to keep organized. Now, as my supply of freezer bags dwindles, I compulsively cling to empty salsa and sour cream tubs. But, I’m using them. Making every meal at home produces leftovers, and the inside of my refrigerator looks like I’m hoarding cottage cheese. Soon I’ll be stockpiling bread bags and rubber bands the way my parents did.
Several friends are putting this forced downtime to good use, cleaning out storage units and posting photos of forgotten treasures online. This would be a hard time for me to make keep-or-toss decisions. Empty jumbo tissue boxes make great shoe protectors when out foraging in the time of COVID-19. Besides, no charities are open for donations; where to stash the heap once it’s purged?

Having gone through the purge twice before full-timing, I was missing my fabric scrap box with no supplies to make masks. Luckily this last year my husband convinced me to take my old sewing machine along. He had twice watched me troop through RV parks asking to borrow a sewing machine to hem or repair clothing. I spent 2 1/2 hours in line to find out I can buy fabric but every retailer is out of elastic and non woven interfacing. I made do with what I could find and my family is now protected. 😷
I might be considered a hoarder- an organized one but a hoarder nonetheless 🙂 but I’m not sure my collection of sequin and beaded fabrics, feather boas, vintage ball gowns, fans, purses and stilettos will do me much good during this fun event! I can however use the light up flashing Mardi Gras toss collection I now have to signal for help should a need arise 😆 so thank you for that my friend LOL!!! stay safe until I see your smile again!!
Being the Minimalist that I am; that’s it !!
